Field of Dreams

The main difference, is one is an old wise tale and one is a movie. Both he and Beowulf are somewhat leaders in their own way. They both have quests which are their Destinys. Beowulf is a long journey. While in FoD, his journey is almost completely supernatural.

Social Commentary

When people usually start to talk about society they start off with everything that is wrong with society. Well, we live in a great and free country. But every year there’s always something different going on. We have technology advances, we will have new leaders in our country this coming year, we have new jobs, and most of all we will have new humans. Technology can be an addiction sometimes, and depending on how you use it. Some people have to use it every single day for their jobs, while others don’t. From what I see, technology and phones today help create relationships and friendships. You may not be able to see whomever everyday, so you can just text them. And that doesn’t entirely mean we’ve totally lost the ability to communicate in person.

Morte D Arthur

The elements of Medieval romance in this unit were Chivalry, Noble Hero’s, Women being highly valued, Supernatural events, and the 3 and 7 repetition. Launcelot was the noble knight, and King Arthur was the tragic hero. There was a lot of satire in the movie we watched Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail.

The qualities that are still around today are Chivalry, Highly respected females, and we sorta have supernatural events. Chivalry has been around for a long time and I still believe it is still expected today even though most women can do things for themselves. We also do have high respect for females, as some run our country and teach the youth of the country which are two very respected positions.

Canterbury Tales Reflection

The Canterbury tales were readings of a few different stories in class. We read The Prologue, The Pardoners Tale and The Wife of Baths Tale. These stories are from the Middle English time period written by Geoffrey Chaucer. We stayed on this unit for a while.

Wife of Bath- This story showed a lot of how women were in this time period. There was a knight who was overcome by lust and did some not so good things to a woman. But the queen gives him a chance to redeem himself he won’t loose his head. So he has a year to find out what a woman wants and has to report back to her after a years time. He does find a wife and finds out what she wants.

Pardoners Tale- The pardoner isn’t a very good person. His sole goal is to just get more and more money from people. He is a very greedy person. He ends up dying in the end.

Sir Gawain and the Green knight.

The last unit we did for the first semester was about Sir Gawain and the green knight. Ive never read or heard this story before and it was very interesting. We learned a lot about the old language used then compared to now.

I thought the setting and the plot of the story was unique. The movies we watched about it were very unique as well. There were some parts of the story that I didn’t understand all that well, but that happens for every story our class does.

Historical Background Project

The first project we did for the new quarter was the Historical Background Project. For the assignment we had to write 2 paragraphs of each topic following 2 pictures. We had to have a total of 5 topics. My 5 topics were the Black Death, Magna Carta, Westminster Abbey, Saint Augustine, and The Italian Renaissance.

We had to use “new tech” for this assignment. I chose to use Prezi out of the options that were given. I would’ve much rather used google docs or powerpoint but we were not allowed to. I don’t think I will use Prezi in the future.

Beowulf and Elegies

The most recent unit we’ve done in class was the Beowulf and Elegies readings. The story of Beowulf is both an epic and a elegy. An elegy is a poem of great reflection, it usually is about mourning a death of someone or something.

We’ve learned from Beowulf that most movies today are based around the same theme as that story. Most movies have a hero, and usually have a flaw from either dying or not ending it so well. Ive learned from the Beowulf story is that your mind can be your greatest strength, but also can be your greatest weakness.

Scholarship/ Cover letter

The second unit we discussed in class was the cover letter and scholarship app section. The best way to write a scholarship essay is to be unique because colleges read many different essays every week. You need to stick out and be different that everyone else. Also remove any clutter you may have.

Students in my class had the choice to either write a cover letter or a scholarship essay, I chose to write a scholarship essay. Most colleges require you to write an essay, so to be literate in writing those may increase your chances on getting into the college you desire.

Clutter in Writing

The first unit we did this year was Clutter in Writing. Clutter in writing is an extra word or sentence that doesn’t really help your main point. Clutter is going to make you sound very boring and people are going to want to quit reading whatever you wrote.

The best way to fix clutter is to go through whatever you said and think if there is a better way to say or word your statements. It can be very easy to fix clutter, but also very easy to have clutter. The best way to write is to have a clear mind, and be relaxed. Always check whatever you’re writing for clutter.
